The UN General Assembly has voted to replace the traditional world map with one that more accurately reflects the size of Africa.

The “Correct the Map” resolution, sponsored by Togo and backed by African Union (AU) members, passed with the support of 164 nations, including France and the UK. The US was the only nation to vote against it - while there were six abstentions.

The UN vote is non-binding but will see changes to the maps used by institutions around the world.

You cannot map a 3D surface onto a 2D plane without either distorting the 2D plane or cutting it. There are various maps that go with the cutting it route, but honestly they look weird.

People who care about such things have complained for years about the current map projection because it’s stretches northern regions so the country look bigger than the actually are. Although it doesn’t really matter until you get in the Arctic circle.
