Yeah I was going to say, there is a proprietary piece of software they use at work that uses like seven gigs of RAM for no reason.

The trouble is oil prices are going up as well which means that everything else is more expensive. So unless your hobby is sitting alone in a dark room with all the power switched off, you’re losing out as well.
It’s a little better than usual pricing simply because it isn’t as popular, it’s not as if you have a choice in the type of RAM that you buy for your system, but there’s not much in it. I guess if you are im the market for a lot of RAM it would be a noticeable price difference l, but if you just in the market of a couple of sticks to add to your personal rig you’re not going to notice the price difference that much, it certainly less than the fluctuations you get between retailers.
When they say it’s predicted to last another three years what they mean is they hope it lasts another three years because that means they’re Investments will be worth more when the bubble finally does burst.
They can’t predict the market any more than anyone else can so this doesn’t really mean anything. We wait as well be asking tarot card readers if RAM prices are going to decrease anytime soon.

7·3 days agoNot only did they have my age range completely inaccurate they’ve also listed camping as a hobby. I don’t even own a tent, I have no idea why they think I like camping. I’ve never bought any camping equipment from them, I’ve never accessed the website from communal wi-fi in a campsite. I don’t know where they’re getting this assumption from.

Technology@lemmy.world•Retailers are pulling back from self-checkout after years of theft, errors, and questionable time savingsEnglish
1·3 days agoThe only self checkout machines I’ve ever seen that actually seem to save time are the ones in IKEA. That’s only because people are buying such bulky heavy items that they don’t bother weighing them. It’s the scales that cause all the problems, they are sensitive enough that they can detect if you put so much as a single piece of paper on them but are I’ll let down by the fact no one weighs the original product.
Oh there’s an unexpected item in the bagging area is their, could it possibly be that loaf of bread I just scanned? No apparently not because this product is overweight by a whole nanogram.

3·3 days agoI’m pretty sure I stolen bottle of wine because of the self checkout.
I’m bought a bunch of stuff and some wine, I scan to the bottle and it beeped and I put it in the bag but then no one came to ID me when it came time to paying, presumably it somehow didn’t register.

1·9 days agoYou can loose a portion of your brain and still be you.
Only if you have the personality of a sea slug. Look at Nicholas Gage, he had a metal rod thrust to his head and had a definite personality change. Now you may be less complex than an allegory of basic neural function, but I suspect most people are not.

Technology@lemmy.world•Someone ‘Torturing’ LLMs in a Robot Prison Has Triggered the Dumbest Debate in 'AI' YetEnglish
81·9 days agoOk but if you’re going the consciousness arrives from a complicated enough system route of reasoning, then you have to consider the degree of complexity before consciousness arrives, that fruit fly has about 150,000 neurons and those things are definitely not self-aware. Modern cutting edge AI have around 8.5 billion neurons, which is still considerably less than an octopus (which people are morally fine with catching for food) which are definitely intelligent but not sapient. So even if consciousness arise from simply having enough processing units, we’re not at the level yet where we need to be concerned.
It’s also worth pointing out that pain is an evolutionary trade that came into existence because it prevented injury (if it hurts to do something, it encourages you to stop doing that thing). Meanwhile AI exist in a non-physical reality, they cannot be damaged by the environment, so there is no such thing as pain for them. An AI cannot feel pain anymore than the human can feel pain when that video game character gets blown up.
