Clips is a TikTok-like vertical video stream where users can scroll through excerpts from Netflix series, films, and specials, as well as trailers for upcoming titles.

Disney+ has “Verts”. It’s fucking ridiculous.

It’s wild to watch these companies chase after one another with no thought. Just “TikTok is popular! Can we be TikTok?!?!???”

You have a product. Do that product well. Fuck!

CEOs are really herd animals, always looking what the other guy is doing and living in a continuous fear of missing out the next big thing. It sure doesn’t help with shareholders breathing down their neck pushing for short term profit and growth.

I mean, I agree, but at the same time you’ve got to be trying to keep up or your business dies. Like, if blockbuster has tried to compete with Netflix instead of ignoring it, we’d still have blockbuster

Block buster didn’t have ads turning the movie, just some trailers you could skip. Plus when I went to block buster we’d find something(s) and go home an watch it. Not this scroll through a mountain of the same crap in different categories just to maybe find something after a much longer period of time.

Fuck we had it good with blockbuster.

The only ads in the store I remember where card board signs similar to what you see at the theater. That’s not at all the same as 1 or more 30 second unskippable add.

there were also these TVs in the store. sometimes we’d get to watch movies, sometimes they’d have these ads on them. one summer i was working 3 or 4 jobs i can’t remember (it was a summer) and one of them was blockbuster.

Sure, but is this actually a good idea?

The argument would be that these “short form videos” improve discoverability. I can’t speak for Netflix (since I’m not subscribed), but I am subscribed to Disney+. I completely agree that the discoverability in the Disney+ app is bad. But I’m also subscribed to Hulu, which is now owned (fully) by Disney. The discoverability in Hulu is actually pretty good.

Everything that is “Disney+ Exclusive” is only available using Disney+. Everything that is “Hulu Exclusive” is available on both Hulu and Disney+. So Disney+ has everything I want, but the app sucks.

The plan is by the end of 2026 to turn down the Hulu app and only use the Disney+ app. So, is Disney improving the Disney+ app? Nope, they’re adding “Verts”.

This is what bothers me. If you have an interesting idea to improve your app, do that. If you’re just chasing the current flavor of the week, stop. Spend that time doing something useful.

i think the verts is more competing with youtube’s competing with tiktok, yeah. but i also think i’m very much not the target audience. i’m a long form video. if i’m going to give the filmmaker the respect of my time, give me the respect of at least thirty minutes of plot dammit. or at least thirty minutes of michael bay level explosions and a bowl of popcorn. fill me with bread and send in the clowns dammit. fuck dammit i had to mention bread. the baker gets to the bakery in an hour i bet i could pinch a loaf. look what you’ve done.
