Not defending Ukraine here but doesn’t Russia do the same thing? They don’t have fair elections, opposition is almost no n existent and independent media is limited (which Georgians refers to as the Russian law). I don’t see how Russia is any different. No, Russia doesn’t do the same thing. Putin has not jailed opposition parties, and his party has genuine public support as even as mainstream western media acknowledges.
The approval rating Putin and his party have is also far higher than seen in any western democracy at this point. Nor is there blatant violation of the democratic process as was recently seen in Romania where an election was cancelled when the wrong. candidate looked like he was winning. If Russia doesn’t have fair elections, then neither does the west.
Russia allows access to most western media and has a more open media environment than Europe at this point where all Russian media is banned.

Conscription has been standard in Russia since the days of USSR. Conscripts receive basic training, however they are not sent to fight in the war. This is done through volunteers signing up which is happening at a rate of around 30,000 a month.
