Well, I’m still glad offline LLM’s exist. The models we download and store are way less popular then the mainstream, perpetually online ones.
Once I beef up my hardware (which will take a while seeing how crazy RAM prices are), I will basically forgo the need to ever use an online LLM ever again, because even now on my old hardware, I can handle 7 to 16B parameter models (quantized, of course).
capitalism worked pretty well in the 40’s and 50’s, in the USA, and then the corporate leaders realized that they could be overlords if they just stopped caring about everything but money.
We know kindness and money can coexist, but if little boy jack is taught from day one that if you don’t game the system, you will lose, he’s going to grow up to be Elon Musk.
I mean, even open source LLM’s at the moment can solve somewhat tedious and tricky problems, and just on somewhat mid-tier consumer hardware. Supercomputers exist, and it just seems, with time, breakthroughs are inevitable.
But I will admit, like you say, we have limits, but in the realm of technology, the only real limitations are energy and hardware.
If you don’t see AI replacing many roles, yet you know that LLM’s are not what many seem to think they are, text generators and not AGI, then it seems you don’t believe that AGI will ever happen.
Technology will continue to develop for decades and maybe centuries to come. To only see the short term possibilities is to forget how quickly technology advances.
And even just limiting the discussion to the short-term, what makes you think billionaires aren’t taking advantage of the hype and coercing governments to forego safety and regulation? Maximizing profit over enhancing the lives of the common man?

Yeah, I pretty much had a similar linux pathway, started with kubuntu -> ubuntu -> arch (manjaro, then endevour os) -> Nobara. I was afraid of NixOS so I avoided it, might try it one day if I’m feeling spicy.
I’ve yeeted entire boot partitions and learned the hard way not to mess with what I can’t handle haha.
what music client do you use? I’m using mpd + rmpc right now, finally found something that’s customizable and powerful.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot firewire was a thing haha, glad that didn’t catch on. Hope you can get those tunes somehow, I know I wish I still had my music collection from my old mp3 players, or even the ipod shuffle and 1st gen nano I used to rock back in the day.

Concerning how soulseek works, as I understand it, it’s basically like the bittorrent protocol, just another peer-to-peer sharing protocol.

Nice, I think the world’s a little better when we can share our musical tastes. It’s definitely some work to get all that music organized, but I’ve been messing around with scripting with python and that can do a lot of the monotonous stuff like fixing filenames and what not.
And plus you never know, you’ll see songs being uploaded from your library and might think, “who the heck downloaded that?”, as I have many times. Every time I see unique music being downloaded, I feel a little better knowing eclectic music taste is still alive and well haha
Ahh, my bollywood folder is fairly small right now, under 20 tracks. I tend to fill my library either with albums I’m curious about, or with songs I’ve heard and really want to replay for the future.
Once in a while, you can find people who have some decent collections, but since not everyone logs on at once, it’s sometimes a game of cat and mouse. If I can’t find it on the soulseek network, I’ll grab stuff from places like doubledouble, usually for things that are very new.

I mean, I’m poor but can afford such things, I mean, $18 a month for a VPN+seedbox combo is well worth it for some digital freedom, and I could even go cheaper if I wanted less features. The seedbox alone is just $8 CAD a month, so I mean, it’s not crazy expensive.
Surprised no one has mentioned using a remote seedbox. There are providers who allow public torrent use, even if some of them discourage it. You can download torrents via a remote server, and then connect to that server via ssh, syncthing or sftp, which are all encrypted, and has the added benefit of giving you a shot at getting into private trackers, if you ever snag an open invite, where having a seedbox is almost essential.
I know it’s a normal thing, to not instantly look for alternatives to software you might have used for your entire life, and I get it, if it hasn’t harmed you or done you wrong, then it’s probably fine to stick with what you know.
But as someone who first experienced alternatives to Windows back in 2006, and like others who walked the more beaten path, we’ve grown tired of this stuff. The slow, decline of Windows, and the promise of something better with every update.
It won’t surprise me if one day they decide to full send it and charge a monthly subscription to use the full OS, not one bit. Enshittification, it’s bound to happen. I’m teaching my child about linux now, so they’ll be aware that software doesn’t have to suck.
Try something different, it’s a good way to live, to know you don’t have to remain where you are if you don’t want to. Of course, only if you want to!

Funny how Kaspersky thinks what it comes down to are people who are afraid of change, when there’s also just people who are also not too happy with the direction Microsoft is taking their OS. And then there’s the fact that their stats only come from users who still use Kaspersky, which might be mostly businesses, instead of the average joe, skewing the data.
I moved to a linux-only system for about 5 years now, and it’s been great, as a daily-driver and a learning experience as well. Microsoft does so much hand-holding that it’s own users are not expected to care about security and privacy.
