Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Dashcam data retention recommendation?English
2·1 month agoGiven the need for a dash cam to be reliable, this is one place where I’d suggest considering a typical commercial offering over a cobbled together self hosted solution.
EDIT: I misunderstood - i thought you were planning to use your phone as a dash cam but instead you’re just wondering about getting the data off a commercial dash cam!

I’d say def try searxng first. It turns out I mainly wanted a clean display of results instead of “better” results then Google. No ads, no ai shit. Kagi was nice but the difference didn’t justify a paid service for me, vs selfhosting.
I will say that I find searxng image search to be lacking, same with maps.

1·2 months agoI was looking into team speak and found this video that captures someone else’s experience.
Tldw; lots of super neat features, some clunky interfaces that maybe highlight how used to discord we’ve gotten

1·2 months agoYou know how your favorite show got pulled by Netflix, and you can’t find it without subscribing to another service?
I self host to take control of that back.

A self hosting thing that I did after having a kid that’s helped us tremendously is hook up an internal camera to frigate to use as a baby monitor, and then have automations in home assistant to automatically change which parent gets notified about crying in the middle of the night based on an agreed-upon “shift”. Just a thought to consider :)
Working on getting bazarr to work with Plex, turns out it still requires radarr/sonarr even if I don’t sail the seven seas. Guess I’ll be learning the entire stack tonight :)

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•How to set up a decentralized game/chat serverEnglish
31·2 months agoFair points, it is unfortunate that decentralized can mean self hosting your own alternative service or hosting a service in a distributed fashion.
The situation still could’ve been resolved without insulting someone who wanted to be helpful, but was maybe not careful.
Or implying that their behavior reflects poorly on the entire blahaj community. That community don’t mean any harm.

This type of pointless snark
Pot calling the kettle black here. Chill out, they were trying to help.
You wrote a post with a title that their comment helps with, no need to be a jerk, and maybe consider more specific titles that capture your actual ask.
It’s currently akin to a post titled “how do I invest in a 401k?” And having the actual ask be the logistics of logging into vanguard.
As someone who tried syncthing with their non-self hosting friends, let me tell you, that edit folder option is terrifying for the general public lol
I guess you can do "local"backups then syncthing them over, but thats a bit contrived
I remember before, you could use crashplan to easily backup to a computer at a friend’s house and vice versa. Anyone know any similar tools? The biggest requirement would be that it’s easy enough to use that someone who doesn’t know what “self hosting” is can do it.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Why I Ditched Spotify, and How I Set Up My Own Music Stack | LeshiCodesEnglish
2·3 months agoYup, I don’t have an entire solution, just wanted to share a potential piece of the puzzle. I could’ve made that more clear as you pointed out
Generally, on Lemmy if I get a single downvote within seconds of a negative reply it gives me the impression that whoever I’m talking to us an emotionally stunted toddler who can’t use their words to adequately describe their thoughts and need to do the digital version of throwing a fit. It gives some additional context on how to engage (or not) lol.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Why I Ditched Spotify, and How I Set Up My Own Music Stack | LeshiCodesEnglish
21·4 months agoI was addressing this part of what you said:
Even if you have a vast collection of music you don’t know (by whatever means your get it), you still need the algorithms to pick the music that you’re likely to like.
EDIT: also, fwiw, I didn’t downvote you lol.

It’s not mentioned in the reporting, but according to the source they say it is going to be opt-in (or at least something with opt-in in mind)
