the SD card slot is removed because it’s a security issue. data on SD card is per spec (iirc) not encrypted sothat it’s compatible with typical SD reader software on your computer. therefore anything that you store on your phone’s SD card can be read by an attacker who steals your phone and extracts the SD card.

make phones slimmer which is necessary because of uhh
to lower manufacturing costs
also i want to point out that eSIM has potential advantages. when i order a physical SIM card, i have to wait 3 days to receive the SIM card by mail (of course that varies based on where you live). when i buy eSIM, i can get access as soon as payment is processed, which with modern banking systems takes between 5 seconds and 15 minutes.

what if i want triple SIM?

The reason why journals exist is because they’re supposed to do filtering of bad papers. Whether they actually do that, of course, is another question. And whether it could be done in a (much) better way than it’s currently done is also an important question for academia.

gives me this vibe, just replace erdogan with trump and turkey with, you know, the US

will offer users their choice […] “We’re not incentivized to push one model or the other,” he says. “So we’re going to try to go to market with multiple models.”
it could be worse

The best way to implement that ban is to have a variable on the device (smartphone) that holds the approximate birthdate of the user (sth like 2002-01-01) and then the device gives forward the information about whether the user is 16+, 18+ forward to any app of maybe even website that requests that info.
The parent who buys the device gets a code to configure the device to set the birthdate, and without that code, it’s not changeable for the user. The platforms then only have to look at that variable to figure out whether the user is old enough.
This way, you shift responsibility to the user, but in a way that is technically possible. Because today, it’s almost impossible for a not ultra-tech-affine parent to actually implement age controls on their children’s devices.

This might be what makes the fediverse finally become mainstream.

especially in terms of being less addictive

This is also good news because it obviously means that german government will have to review the software used for possible security holes and close them, so everyone who also uses the software gets security fixes.

get them jobs
jobs are ableist. i don’t see why people revere them so much.

from my experience, netflix is one of the few companies who actually produce hot new shows somewhat regularly. it’s weird to me how everybody keeps shitting on them.

It genuinely floors me that few medium and large-sized companies don’t use Linux for desktops.
our university does. at least on most computers.

especially if it’s a windows computer :D

I like the analogy with a surgeon or a firefighter.
Of course, the surgeon has to be available in case somebody needs an operation. But the best that can happen to society at large is that the surgeon is never needed because nobody’s sick.
Same with firefighters. Of course they have to be there to fight fires, but it’s better if houses don’t start to burn down in the first place!

“Companies aren’t innovating anymore and it’s costing the economy”
companies aren’t innovating anymore because physical limits have been reached. Moore’s law holds no longer true. Transistors can’t be packed more tightly into space anymore while also making the computer chip cheaper at the same time.
to summarize:
in the past, the US forced everyone to comply with US tech because the US was economically too powerful to deny requests to, but now that is changing because US economy is not so important internationally anymore, due to tariffs but also because US consumers are becoming poorer and therefore less important as a consumer market, so it’s easier to ignore the US and their requests.
