This is yet another thing the Republicans have been attacking (funding for rural broadband providers). Our rural areas are actually extremely well covered. Most of the midwest is fibered up. My local co-op’s minimum offered speed is 350x350.

The only thing Plex has on Jellyfin are client apps. Sever-side… Jellyfin hands down. I was super surprised to see av1 transcoding support… In Plex we JUST got HEVC.
I’m not hating on Plex by any means, but when I have an issue with Plex, Jellyfin picks up the slack. I’ll be using Jellyfin full time after the ATV app re-write.
I am curious, though, what is it that makes you think Jellyfin’s software is inferior? Since I’ve been following, Jellyfin has released new features long before Plex.

Lol! 10Mbps is usually more than enough. It’s a common misconception that more speed equals less latency.


It sounds like 50 gig PON is the next logical step. We’ve deployed XGSPON, which is 10x10 Gbps shared between whatever splitter you want to use(anywhere from like 8 way to 128, we generally use 32 way splitters), and we’re testing equipment that will supposedly be supported to 100Gbps PON. Things are moving quickly!

I’ve been trying SimpleX a little this week. It hasn’t been great, unfortunately. It could be an iOS issue, but notifications aren’t coming through. Maybe Android will be better.


I had a frustrating issue yesterday. I had removed drives, and forgot to edit my hardware config, so it kept failing to boot and would go into emergency mode, which I didn’t have an internet connection in so I couldn’t rebuild.
I ended up having to figure out which drive was missing in order to get it to boot (long story, I had to go through a stack of 4tb drives to find the right one).
How could I have fixed this issue had the drive not been available? Manually bringing up the network stack, I suppose?

This wouldn’t be for a single customer. It’s 50 gig PON, which would serve 32-64 different customers. I’m not an engineer, but I’m assuming it will pave the way for 2.5-5 Gbps services.
Most companies are currently switching from GPON (2.5 gig shared 32 ways), to XGSPON (10 Gbps split between 32-64 customers).
The company I work for has been deploying XGSPON on Nokia transport for a few years now. It’s very nice.
Edit: I wasn’t real specific on how it’s split. So that 50 Gbps feed is sent down a single fiber to a splitter, which is often in the field in an AP cabinet. From there fiber that actually goes to the customer’s premise gets connected. It feels a little dirty splitting like some sort of old coax system, but it makes rolling out fiber to the home much, much quicker.


If they could both just beat each other to death, that’d be great.

I would absolutely run FreeBSD on my laptop if the WiFi wasn’t awful. It doesn’t matter which chipset, max is like 20 Mbps. Rouuugh.
On the server side of things, Docker/Podman is so convenient, and keeps me from blowing so much time on “maintenance.”
Hopefully, some day, I can daily a BSD. Until then- NixOS!
