PixelAlchemist@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•YouTube looks to be testing server-side ad injection to counter ad blockersEnglish2·1 year agoGoogle’s own Shaka sdk (video playback with ads) gives ad markers in the initial video manifest so that they can be marked on the timeline, so hopefully it’ll be trivial. Usually (but not always) with SSAI, the ads are spliced into the stream just before being sent to the client. That way if a user has just recently watched an ad pod, the server can choose to ignore that marker for a better UX in hopes that they don’t bounce if ads are too frequent.

PixelAlchemist@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•Spotify is raising the cost of Premium subscriptions, againEnglish1·1 year agoSure. Obviously it’s more complex than that, but it helps illustrate where the math came from in the parent comment. I don’t know why Tidal pays more, but I’m hypothesizing its because most of their “co-owners” of Tidal are themselves, artists/musicians, which IMO is significantly better than the out of touch folks running Spotify.
PixelAlchemist@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•Spotify is raising the cost of Premium subscriptions, againEnglish3·1 year agoThink of it not in terms of revenue percentages, but by payouts per song stream:
Service Payout/song Plays to make $1 Tidal Music $0.01284 78 Apple Music $0.008 125 Amazon Music $0.00402 249 Spotify $0.00318 314 YouTube Music $0.002 500 Pandora $0.00133 752 Deezer $0.0011 909 So song for song, Apple is paying 2.5x what Spotify is (.008/.00318), and Tidal is paying out a whopping 4x what Spotify pays.

PixelAlchemist@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•Spotify is raising the cost of Premium subscriptions, againEnglish3·1 year agoI’ve been using deemix, and for the most part it’s been pretty seamless. Stuff direct downloads instantly, but it’s all in 128kbps now unfortunately. Then I have lidarr monitor everything for a lossless version.
PixelAlchemist@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•Spotify is raising the cost of Premium subscriptions, againEnglish341·1 year agoYou should check out Plexamp while you bridge the gap. It has tidal support built in, and you can self-host your own collection as you build it up. Then when you’re done with tidal, you don’t have to learn or download a new app.
PixelAlchemist@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•The Apple Vision Pro’s eBay prices are making me sadEnglish28·1 year agoThe author obviously thought the value was worth it when he made the purchase. Now he’s sad that others think it’s worth less than he paid? So for him the perceived value of his purchase is based on what other people think, which is pretty sad. Then he does this self-depreciating write up about the experience, calling himself a fool.
Spend your money how you want, but don’t let other people’s opinions determine how you feel about it. You’ll get no sympathy from me, bud.

Aren’t they all still WebKit under the hood though? Until they allow other web engines this is still just the illusion of choice.

The oldest phone that still runs the newest version of iOS was released in 2018, so frankly I’m not sure what you’re talking about.

I don’t see how the term “Alchemy” is any different than “Transubstantiation”, and the Catholic Church seems pretty down with that.
Imagine living your entire life with this kind of fear. Religion does crazy things to people’s minds.

PixelAlchemist@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•Plex update raises concerns over potential sharing of porn viewing habits | Be careful what you watchEnglish103·2 years agoThe view-state sync feature and all the social stuff is def opt-in though. Of course they made it super easy to do the opt-in, they want to push that feature, but I remember I did have to actively choose both of those things after the update.
Obviously I don’t really want my “friends” getting weekly emails about what I’m watching, but I don’t know — If I were self-hosting my own porn, maybe I’d take 5 extra seconds to read the screen that says stuff about sharing activity.

Well when you put it that way…
I mean objectively the language has fundamental problems. I don’t think anybody would fight you on that, but all programming languages have quirks. Modern JS definitely isn’t as bad as the frequency of the joke warrants. And if the demographic of this community is anything like the other site, it’s largely comprised of 1st and 2nd year CS Students who have only ever written in whatever language their curriculum teaches (Python or Java).
Can we please not bring the “JS bad” humor here please? That joke is so tired.
Plexamp can do all of this (not sure about mdna speakers though) and it has Tidal integration.
Finamp will also work but it lacks library/genre radio and mix support last time I checked.
