The current amount of unskippable ads means there cannot possibly be a worse experience. Any kind of ad blocking, even if it means learning to write and compile your own code is better than base YouTube.

What you’re saying is already very possible. Twitch is at the forefront of fighting adblockers and they’re constantly adding new ways to serve ads.
Realistically speaking I think YouTube has been only tolerating ad blockers and will start rolling out new methods next year.

Every super hardcore case modding nerd was taking a Dremel to their side panels for more fan space and places for windows. They all used those old school fan grilles screwed onto the outside.

It completely invalidated the point of the Google version for a long while. Pocketcasts is probably the oldest 3rd party app I still use today.
The limited library was their biggest problem in my opinion. It’s acceptable if you want mainstream, well known artists centered on appealing to North America but there were so many international and independent groups that weren’t on the service. Higher quality streaming is only worth it if you can listen to what you like.
