World News@lemmy.ml•Top Brazilian Official Warns Trump of 'Vietnam-Style' Regional Conflict If He Attacks Venezuela
16·23 days agoDon’t confuse “top official” with military official. He’s a civilian politician who was once minister of defense. He’s from the right-wing of the governing Worker’s Party and is currently an advisor for Lula.
The same Lula who did not recognise Maduro’s election in 2024, blocked Venezuela’s entry into BRICS, won’t even name Venezula in official speeches, and is now cozying up to the USA in exchange for the end of the tariffs.
Brazil won’t intervene. It might even help the US.

14·26 days agoHad to look into their history, and sadly it’s not! Though I suppose at this point it’d be easy to hack up a bot that always comments the same things on Yog’s posts on here and pass as an actual liberal user.

World News@lemmy.ml•Sweden wants long-range weapon systems able to strike inside Russia
8·1 month agoI think it’s fair, long range missiles are the “diplomatic weapon”. Give long range missiles to Sweden and also Cuba, Venezuela, the Sahel States, Colombia, Mexico, Bolivia and any other small country that feels threatened by a military superpower. That’ll ensure no more wars. \s

World News@lemmy.ml•Lula Stares Down Trump and Scores Tariff Victory for Brazil
2·1 month agoAnother Lula bad move portrayed as a victory. The price of groceries were going down in Brazil specifically because of the tariffs.
Now he has secured an end to those tariffs which mostly affected only the comprador agribusiness sector, while selling off more of the country, from water companies, to oil in the Amazon, and now the rare earths deals.
The US isn’t even Brazil’s main trading partner. This is only a win for the Brazilian agribusiness (fuck them) and the US citizenry. Brazil itself should self-impose tariffs for exportation until every citizen can afford groceries in one of the most fertile countries in the world.

2·1 month agoWhile relations with Columbia and Trump have chilled over boat murders, they participated in immigrant rendition program, and are a CIA approved colonial government.
I’m not sure I’d put Colombia’s current government under Petro as “CIA approved”, but I’d like to hear your thoughts if you genuinely hold this position.

World News@lemmy.ml•Russian troops liberate eight communities in Ukraine operation over week — top brass
8·3 months agoThat applies to Zelensky too. Also to most states supported by NATO, or the portrayal of those antagonized by NATO. It’s almost as if it’s a worthless definition.

World News@lemmy.ml•The U.S. Rushes its “Gang Suppression Force” in Haiti Through the UN Security Council, Despite Protests and Warnings from Russia and China
4·3 months agoThe current Haitian government is a provisory council appointed by the OAS, armed with Washington-paid Kenyan police, and some of the “gangs” are demanding new elections since the president was assassinated in 2019, and also calling for a more sovereign Haiti.
It’s a mess, but also seems inline the renewal in focus on the Caribbean. Control the Sea around Venezuela, isolate Colombia and Mexico’s East while retaking the Panama Canal and Ecuador.

World News@lemmy.ml•Russia will use nuclear weapons in response to attacks deep into the country — deputy Kolesnik
2·4 months agoITT: people confusing remarks by a parlamentarian as official statements by the Ministry of Defense or the head of the executive.
The red line about deep strikes has been around ever since the beginning of the war, with only minor adjustment of nuclear policy since the Storm Shadow/ATACMS deployment back in November last year. Instead of nuclear war all we got was the live test of the Oreshnik.
The current Russian leadership is cautious to a fault when it comes to nuclear escalation. A single parlamentarian is not going to change that, and the headline is misleading. Instead of being smug about it for the 100th time since the beginning of the war, pray that the UA army doesn’t get their hands on a dirty bomb.
