Almost 5,000 police officers were on duty in the German capital to prevent disturbances and incidents similar to those of the previous year.

    Most likely related to this:

Berlin police have turned a neighborhood known for its Arab population into a heavily restricted area, closing parts of it and prohibiting any kind of protests against the Israeli genocide in Gaza.

Doesn’t sound like a country that learned from its mistakes

As long as there are humans, there will get fascists. It’s one of life’s constants.

Fascism is an extremely recent phenomena, that only came about in the particular context of industrial, capitalist nation states facing crisis. Something that has only existed for a century or two out of human history can hardly be called a constant.

I never said it was a thing throughout all human history.

I don’t think it’s related. It’s been a new years tradition in Berlin for years.

I have friends and family in Berlin and I spent new year’s Eve there five years ago. It was totally crazy. People shooting fireworks at each other in the streets and from/to the balconies.

I ended up with a jacket full of burn holes, and we were in a kind of quiet neighborhood on the outskirts of the city.

In these modern times, a very valuable skill is looking at the date on an article.
