People in the early stages of psychosis may be more vulnerable to AI chatbots making it worse, with a new study finding that AI psychosis is more common in people experiencing their first episode of psychosis. The study used health records from a large medical centre to look at the role AI chatbots played in people’s psychotic symptoms. The research found that around 0.013% of patients with psychosis had records showing that their psychosis worsened with chatbot use, which the authors say matches rates provided by OpenAI. Psychosis worsening interactions with AI chatbots were most common among patients experiencing their first episode of psychosis, which the authors say suggests the early phase of psychotic illness may leave people particularly vulnerable.
