I thought public opinion would reach the point of effecting change by now, but instead the sheep are just screaming “baaaaa” and the people who get it are vegging out to a YouTube video about how plastic is killing us or the risks of overfishing. Houseflies are less shortsighted and selfish than a distressing number of human beings. Props to the dedicated MVPs out there networking, shining a light on corruption, protesting environmental racism and classism, etc, especially the independent journalists.
The MVPs get to do what they do because there is enough buzz and energy going the same way in the trenches. You bet those MVPs are reading social media to check the temperature.

Even if some judge DID push for something like this, and it DID take place, there would likely still be a MASSIVE violent social backlash. Not to say that’s not a good idea, because it is and that’s how you set precedence, but we either need to work our way there or you need somebody smart, powerful, and wise enough to do it without the resulting backlash ending up destructive to the goal of actually fixing it.

This is the real tragedy of the modern data center. In the rush to be number one, they’ve captured the government at the top and use their influence to bypass environmental regulation and pollute at a grand scale just to save a dollar and some construction time. We could have had datacenters running on solar+batteries that could easily make money powering the grid as well, but no, we need to feed the oil machine and we let them run burner turbines unregulated. We could have had datacenters running closed-loop cooling, but no, we let them draw water directly for their cooling systems and dump it unfiltered back into the environment, further polluting it with heavy metals.
As long as one man desires to have more riches than another, this will never be solveable, I’m afraid. The shame.

Yeah, it would probably only take like half to a full decade or so for the $1m/day to equal the build cost of the datacenter (assuming ~$3b, that’s 8.2 yr)

The fine should be much bigger, the generators should be confiscated and any executives that approved it should be in jail.

I opened the article see if the fine per generator or just a whoopsie fee. Oh. MY. god. They dont have to stop operating? Somehow inspectors missed 62 generator and pressure was needed for this?
