A couple of notes:

Remote access: outside the home, the nature of the beast means you need something like Tailscale to get back into your home lab. That’s a quirk I deliberately kept for the sake of simplicity, as the browser needs HTTPS for things like GPS/geolocation. The private Tailscale HTTPS path solves both problems neatly without me having to do shit.

Portability: I didn’t build this for you; I built it for me. That said, I detangled the original home-lab-specific mess enough that you should be able to deploy it elsewhere.
The repo separates the application from the regional data bundle, and the documentation covers installation, other regions, routing, Wikipedia/Kiwix, Tailscale, updating and the various caveats.
In other words: it is now usable by other people (and immediately usable if you happen to live where I do), but you’ll need to do the work. Additionally, that should not be mistaken for me volunteering to become your unpaid support department :)

What does this solve that osmand and other map apps don’t already do?
It combines offline mapping, search, wiki backed POI and routing into a service I control and can use across my own network.
It “solves” the problem of me wanting to do exactly that, using a Raspberry pi, and does so in under half a gig of ram.
It’s not a product I made for anyone else; I’m sharing it because people asked me to share it (thus the all at once remote push to github btw; I had no intention of sharing this until Lemmy asked).
Osmand has all of that, but the maps run locally on the client.
So I guess the only differende is that this lets you download the map once for all your devices instead of on each of your clients directly
Someone over on !perth asked a good question and it made me realise…it’s PiMaps (duh).
Which means you could probably host this on a Pi Zero 2 W with an SD card, then just connect your phone to its Wi-Fi hotspot.
Plug it into your car lighter via a converter, or even easier, run it from a USB battery bank.
So, for about $100 USD, if that, you could have a little “car server” that feeds PiMaps to your phone using basic off-the-shelf gear that you literally Lego together.
My biggest complaint is calling it “Pi” anything, there are already way too many things called “Pi”, some of which are for Raspberry Pi, some of which aren’t, and then there’s Pi itself (the number) it’s just an all-around confusing name and it sometimes makes related things incredibly difficult to search for and find.
That and the dev speaking near fluent slop in all their comments.
To be fair thats probably why the name is unexplainably weird, once the prompt is written the devs job is already done

Someone asked if I would do live turn by turn & voice navigation. Yes and yes…but not for a while / I’m sick of this thing for now.
