          “free” service is usually paid for by advertisers (or by selling the personal data the service harvests from the users). So being surprised there are ads among the search results provided by “free” service makes it sound like it is that person’s first day on the internet

            I don’t think they were “surprised” by it. It seems like they thought it was a search result. Which is fair, IMO. If DDG didn’t want people to mistake that for a search result, then they shouldn’t put it in the spot where the search results go.

              i don’t think that is something DDG is afraid of 😂

              that being said, the ad, or “sponsored link”, whatever you decide to call it, is where sponsored links on search engines where the customers are the advertisers always are - at the top of the results.

              being surprised by that makes you sound like an alien who landed on earth just yesterday for the first time in their life.

              if you want it differently, you may try some search engine where you are the customer (which means you have to pay, because that is what makes you the customer)
