came to say specifying users of anything in googles ecosystem does not make sense given everyone with a google account technically has access to it all. Then on top of it its integrated into the search. so anyone logged in and searching is likely counted as using it. heck its integrated into all kinds of things so…

Usually I’d agree, but the article and Google specifically got in front of this - they only counted people who opened the Gemini app, used the Gemini web interface, or Gemini live. They didn’t count people who simply used a google product that has Gemini in it.

Genuinely impressive numbers taking that into account. Had no idea it was popular.

Edit: has Gemini replaced the Google assistant shortcuts on all Android phones? If so, this is less impressive.

I just stopped using Gemini because it’s so incompetent. I need to know what people see in it because it works worse than Google.

Didn’t they just force it today or something? Not sure if I’d call that a huge commercial success if they’re forcing all of their users to use it

Exactly. It’s not 1B users, it’s 1B installs, and when it comes pre-installed or downloads itself then that number is completely meaningless.

Do they count us as active users when we open the google home app and have to dismiss their annoying purple glowing thing? It would be nice if they could specify what qualifies someone as active. We were already tired of relying on the “cloud” and replacing a product you already had seemed wasteful to integrate into home assistant better, but its more tempting each day.

I believe, the right term to call that, is abuse of their dominance in one market to force their way into another…

Because they effectively forced everyone to use it by getting rid of the only decent voice assistant.

They killed assistant and claimed the unwilling transfer as growth. Shitty journalism or a shitty headline? Either way bad …
