First of all, I’m new here so please don’t kill me, I hope this is the right place to ask but I get a lot of computer related stuff on my feed even in the “Subscribed” Tab, Is it just because there’s an abundance of technologically inclined people on lemmy or am I doing something wrong?
The fediverse in general tends to attract more tech inclined people, this is due to a few reasons IMO
-
Tech people tend to be more privacy conscious, and so will often tend to prefer something like lemmy to something like Reddit/FB/Twitter/etc
-
Tech people love Open Source Software - the level will vary a lot, but I’ve never met a software engineer who doesn’t have good things to say about FOSS
-
The fediverse is slightly more complicated than traditional social media (not as much as many make it out to be, but inarguably its at least a bit more complicated). So tech-phobes are likely to be scared away, where as people with good technical literacy are more likely to both understand how it works, and see the benefits
-
Ostensibly you subscribed to some technology communities. The fediverse tends to attract a lot of IT professionals and hobbyists of which I am both. We tend to want to keep abreast of the latest technologies and trends.
I did? Maybe I did on accident but I just checked the list and I don’t think any are technology communities, unless it’s the “Memes” community, I gotta investigate this manner
Maybe show some screenshots of what you see. Most clients show you the community the post is from.
Most people here are, from my experience, tech enthusiasts and even more specifically from the open source space, so it make sense that e.g. memes are influenced.
Lots of tech-oriented people here. You can try subscribing to lots of communities, and then unsubscribing the ones that have too much tech contents. https://lemmyverse.net/ now lists more than 27,000+ communities.
I get a lot of Linux-themed communities by default. it definitely is a bit much but I can always block some of them if I want. Communities that are not in my first language can also be very common and I have to block a lot of those.
