Technology@lemmy.world•EVs are now 9 times cheaper than petrol or diesel to drive in the UKEnglish
25·13 days agodepreciation per mile is usually a bigger cost than fuel.
OK, this might be something that a fleet manager would care about, but the average driver wouldn’t consider in a hundred years. You don’t have to swipe your card and pay for depreciation every four days. Not to mention that depreciation has no bearing on vehicle type and little connection to physical reality at all.
And if anything, EVs maintenance is lower than expectations. There is no robust recycling of EV batteries for instance because it turns out that the batteries last reliably for 30 years and most of the ones produced are still in service. Also EVs are by nature simpler, with many components being solid state. ICE are rube goldberg masterpieces, the result of decades of continuous development.

Technology@lemmy.world•I Deliberately Bet Like a Problem Gambler. DraftKings Made Me a VIP.English
52·15 days agoCasinos have operated like this for years. People who loose lots of money get flown to VIP events with free hotel, meals, concerts, and even mix with movie stars. People are employed as concierge to these gamblers, so it’s not MGM calling and encouraging you to gamble, it’s Beth or Stephen.
Gambling is just theft with extra steps. I’d ban all of it, including the lottery.

5·16 days agoI have a Kindle Touch and IDGAF if it can connect to Amazon. I don’t connect it to the internet because I’m afraid it’ll update and break. Right now I’ve got it set to never sleep because the wake button doesn’t work. But that little hack only works on old versions of the firmware.
The only service I wanna connect my kindle to is Calibre.

927·22 days agoSimi-related fun fact.
The biggest contributor to TOR is the CIA. They funded it’s creation and are primarily responsible for maintaining it to this day.
The CIA maintains TOR as a way for spies to pass information over the internet. They make it public because if only spies used TOR it would be trivial to catch them. So it’s in their interest that it be public and secure. It’s open source and security experts agree you can trust it.

Technology@lemmy.world•Marvel's Wolverine motorcycle section and quicktime events are getting the wrong kind of attention because "the game plays itself" and "you don't have to press anything"English
1317·23 days ago“Motorcycle section” puts me off this game more than anything else I’ve heard.
To my ear, “motorcycle section” screams single-level set-piece on rails with minimal gameplay designed to show off explosions. Just like that level where you man a minigun out the door of a helicopter. You know the one, from every game released in the 2010s.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•What 32-bit hardware are you still selfhosting on?English
9·1 month agoI’ve got a low-energy Intel Atom server. The CPU is technically 64 bit, but some of the other hardware is still 32bit, limiting you to that.
I’ve been running Debian on it (and several predecessors). I’m stuck on Debian12 because they’re dropping 32bit support after that.
I don’t really use it to “self-host” other than as a file server for backups and Pihole.

Technology@lemmy.world•U.S. FCC approves giant space mirror to deliver 'sunlight on demand,' but what are the legal implications?English
81·2 months agoThis isn’t a weapon, and probably won’t work as intended either.
“Space lasers” don’t work over long distances because the light spreads out. (inverse square law) A pinpoint laser is almost 2m wide when pointed at a low flying aircraft.
Increasing intensity doesn’t work because you’ll need a) a Dyson sphere level of energy input. or b) a mirror big enough to occupy a significant fraction of our orbit.
This is just “data center in space” fiction

In 2024, Madagascar was estimated to have 32m residents. The professor should be ashamed.
